Meet Instructor April Mills
Artist April Mills is influenced by her avid music and pop-culture interests. Her creativity ranges from designing websites, jewelry and wooden purses to teaching others how to paint artwork at Creative Canvas & Wine. Find out why April’s passionate about painting in the studio!
Creative Canvas & Wine: How long have you been an artist?
April Mills: My Dad used to draw cartoons with me when I was a child. I was probably 3- or 4-years-old. My grandpa did, too. I started tracing things as little kids do and taught myself proportions.
CC&W: Does creativity run in your family?
AM: My Dad is more mechanical than I am but he was always a doodler. My grandma on my Dad’s side did a lot of drawing.
CC&W: What sparked your art interest?
AM: I had a love for animals as a kid. The first thing that I actually remember drawing was McDonald’s calendars that my uncle would give me. I received my first calendar when I was 7-years-old. I ripped the pages out after the year was over with and I used all of the coupons and would trace the animals like whales, dolphins and tigers. Each month had a different animal. My grandpa gave me an old set of encyclopedias from the 1960s that had a lot of pictures of animals and old artwork from the Baroque period. I’m fascinated with that particular period of time because there was a lot of anatomy and a focus on body parts.
CC&W: How do you think you have grown as an artist?
AM: I have a BA in digital media from the University of Central Florida. I had a fascination with animals and tended to gravitate toward cartoon-type pictures and would go to the library and look up books on how to create cartoons. When I took art classes in high school, the classes would teach you how to create the human form and more realistic drawings. I went through a period where I was focusing on realistic drawings and now I’m back to the cartoon aspect, which makes me excited because I haven’t done that in a long time. All of my classes focused on life-like illustrations and contour drawings. I have returned to cartooning. Paintings at Creative Canvas & Wine have thicker lines like my “Owl” and “Bat” paintings.
CC&W: Have you come full-circle with your artwork?
AM: I wouldn’t say full-circle but I’m definitely back to where I started, which I like. As far as the digital aspect, I have done some commercial art like business card, flier and package design and pamphlets. I’m doing some of that for Creative Canvas & Wine as well. I have grown digitally and enjoy doing work at Creative Canvas & Wine!
CC&W: What are your other art interests?
AM: I have been creating handmade jewelry for the past 20 years since I was in high school and purses for the past 10 years. I also sew and have made a couple of dresses. I make hair accessories and all kinds of things!
CC&W: Tell me about what items you have in Creative Canvas & Wine’s boutique?
AM: I have four or five pairs of earrings and bottle cap jewelry. I also like to work with a lot of different types of metal. I have a couple of pendants with copper and silver-coated sterling silver wire, which has kind of a steam-punk and industrial style with a feminine edge to it. I’m a big fan of B-horror movies and pop-culture and those images appear in my bottle cap jewelry.
CC&W: What influences your creativity?
AM: I’m a big fan of pop-culture. I like music and I think that’s the biggest influence. I can listen to a song and it will inspire me to create a piece of jewelry. The atmosphere of the song or the major or minor notes. I also studied music in school. I was a vocal major at Seminole Community College. Music, culture and film are the three biggest things that inspire my jewelry and artwork.
CC&W: What’s your art instruction process or style at Creative Canvas & Wine?
AM: I make sure that I pick music that everyone is going to like. I tend to like a darker style of music but that doesn’t mean people coming to paint are going to like the same music. I like music from all different genres. I try to pick the best of the best music that I have. I have a huge MP3 and CD collection. If I’m painting “Guitars,” then I make sure that I have music to rock out to as well as some dance music and music that a wide variety of people are going to enjoy. I grew up with music in my house so, I like all types of music from the 1950s, ’60s, ’70s and on. That’s one of the things that I like about teaching classes so much is that I have control of the play list. I haven’t heard a complaint yet [Laughs]!
I make sure that everyone knows that if they have a question in my painting class, then please ask me! If you want a color mixed together for a specific painting or if you don’t like something yellow, then we can make it blue. If you don’t like it red, then we can make it orange. Stop me along the way if you have any questions. I’m more than happy to stop and explain things or go over it again. I want my class to feel comfortable because I’m not just an instructor but a friend and I’m going to help you make the best piece of art. If you think you can’t paint, then I’m going to make sure that you have a masterpiece by the end of the class. I want to make sure they feel like they have known me for 20 years. If you mess up, then we dry it with a hairdryer and can paint over it! I learned in my art classes that every mistake can’t be looked at as a mistake. You can always change it and turn it into a masterpiece. Things that you may not think look right can be tweaked and can totally look perfect and no one will know that it once was a mistake. There are really no mistakes when it comes to art!
CC&W: Tell me about Creative Canvas & Wine’s paintings.
AM: We create our own one-of-a-kind paintings. We have partnered with Canvas and Cocktails and create paintings that they have the rights to. We are taught how to create those paintings and teach those paintings during classes. We have also put our own little spin on the paintings to make them a little bit different.
CC&W: Tell me about the Creative Canvas & Wine experience.
AM: We like to say it’s totally stress-free. It’s about coming to the studio with your friends, kicking back and letting the stress of the day roll off your back by having a drink. If you don’t drink, then we have soda. You can relax and let the instructor take you on a journey to teach you how to do something different that you may not normally do.
CC&W: Do you have a favorite painting? If so, then why is that painting your favorite?
AM: My favorite paintings are the ones that I come up with! I like my “Bat” and “Owl” paintings. I recently created a “Penguin” for Christmas. I’m excited about coming up with new designs. I really like the “Lover’s Lane” painting. I haven’t tried it yet. I like the “Guitars” painting, too. I like the “Owl” but I think I like my “Bat” more since it’s an original design. It’s my favorite because it’s my little cartoon bat! That’s me right there!
CC&W: Best part about Creative Canvas & Wine and why?
AM: I like this job because of the fact that I can always be thinking of something different and always come up with new designs. I have yet to be stumped! I like the fact that owners Karen and Amye challenge me.
CC&W: Why should folks go to Creative Canvas & Wine?
AM: Because we’re a lot of fun! We play really good music! We have ’80s and ’70s nights! Hopefully, as we grow, we may be able to do more theme nights. You have to come and experience it! You can’t be afraid! Just let go and do your own thing! It’s just trying something new that you normally don’t do with your friends. Hanging out, listening to good tunes, relaxing and doing something different!
On her 100th birthday, a little old lady is treated by her friends to her very first trip to an art gallery. The first painting she sees is a large black canvas with orange and pink blobs dripped on it. The second is a large blue canvas with purple spots all over it. She continues along viewing similar pieces. As she is about to leave, she encounters the artist and says, “I don’t understand your paintings.” The artist replies, “I paint what I feel deep down inside of myself.” To which the lady retorts, “Ever hear of Alka Seltzer?”
